Final-year students frequently face intense academic pressure during the thesis completion process, which gives rise to various communicative responses, one of which is silence. The phenomenon of silence in the context of academic stress has not been extensively studied, particularly from the perspective of nonverbal communication. This study aims to understand the meaning of silence as a form of nonverbal communication among final-year students experiencing academic stress, encompassing their subjective experiences when choosing silence, the contexts in which it emerges, the process of meaning formation, and the factors that discourage verbal disclosure. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, focusing on informants' lived experiences through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that silence is an active and intentional communicative act, not merely the absence of communication. The meaning of silence is contextual and polyphonic, shaped through family experiences, social interactions, and personal reflection, and it evolves alongside individual maturity. Silence emerges in academic, relational, familial, and social contexts, and is influenced by internal factors such as emotional regulation, external factors such as academic pressure, relational factors such as preserving social harmony, and cultural factors. The novelty of this study lies in its effort to understand silence as meaningful communicative silence within the context of students' academic stress, using a phenomenological approach that deeply explores subjective experience.
