Energy consumption in the industrial sector continues to increase in line with economic growth, with boilers serving as one of the primary thermal systems contributing significantly to overall energy demand. However, the thermal efficiency of conventional boilers remains low due to unused waste heat. This study aims to improve boiler thermal efficiency through the implementation of a Heat Exchanger Tank (HET) in a paper and packaging industry located in Karawang, Indonesia. The identified problem is the high coal consumption that exceeds efficiency targets, caused by the low temperature of softener water entering the feed water tank, which is only 35–40°C. The research method employed is applied research using an experimental case study approach with quantitative analysis. The intervention involved installing an HET to utilize waste heat, thereby increasing the water temperature to 80–90°C. The results showed a 6.27% reduction in coal consumption, accompanied by a 20% decrease in combustion waste (Fly Ash and Bottom Ash). Additionally, operational cost savings reached IDR 301,073,863 per year, with a Return on Investment (ROI) of 404% and a payback period of approximately one month. The study concludes that the implementation of HET is effective in improving energy efficiency, reducing emission waste, and delivering significant economic benefits. These findings may serve as a reference for adopting waste heat recovery strategies in other energy-intensive industries that rely on boiler systems.
